Who Am I?

I grew up in a middle-class suburb located in northeast Ohio. My mom worked full-time as an office administrator, and my dad worked full-time as a public servant in a local fire department. I am the oldest of three girls, and we enjoyed the comforts of living in a nice home surrounded by our friends and family. Our favorite game to play was “Teacher.” Okay, maybe that was my favorite game to play. I was the oldest after all.

I was an average student, at best, who didn’t really like school except for the hanging-out-with-my-friends part. So, at the age of 18, I decided to skip the path to college, and went straight to work as an office administrator, just like my mom.

For the next ten years, I worked hard at learning everything I could about commercial property management.

Every day, I woke up at 6:00 a.m., got dressed, packed my lunch, drove thirty minutes to work, worked for eight hours at a desk, drove thirty minutes home, made dinner, watched TV, and went to bed. Then, the alarm clock would ring at 6:00 a.m., and “lather, rinse, repeat” as they say.

I remember thinking to myself, “Is this it? Is this my life for the next forty-plus years?”

One day, a co-worker of mine asked me, “Diana, what do you want to be when you grow up?” With a puzzled look on my face, I answered, “What do you mean? I’m 28 years old! I am grown-up!” He looked at me thoughtfully and said, “But, what did you want to be when you were a kid? What was your dream job? Is this what you want to do forever?”

“Whoa,” I thought, “Why did he ask me this question?” It seemed almost eerie that he would ask me the same question I had been asking myself!

Before I realized what I was saying, I blurted out, “I’ve always wanted to be a teacher.”

Without missing a beat, he grabbed the four-inch-thick book of Yellow Pages, flipped through it until he located the exact phone number he was looking for, and said, “Here. Call this number right now and make an appointment.”

I looked down and saw that he was pointing to the contact information for the Education Department at Cleveland State University.

I called and made the appointment.

It would take me eight years to complete my undergrad degree working full-time and attending school part-time. But, I did it. I accomplished my goal of becoming a teacher. After all that time and hard work, my dream finally came true!

Or did it?

With my diploma, teaching license, and a mountain of school loan debt in hand, I packed-up and moved to Phoenix, Arizona, where I would teach elementary school kids for Eight. Very. Long. Years.

It didn’t take me long to realize that I had made a mistake. I had traded one grinding job for another. Except this time I was in a ton of debt, and I was far away from my family and friends, and I cried more!

Enter my husband, Frank. What a Godsend he was for me! Frank and I met in the 9^th grade when we sat next to each other in English class. Oh, how I had a crush on him! He was tall, dark, and handsome. And that smile! My heart literally skipped a beat when we met. You know that Katy Perry song, “Teenage Dream?” Yep, that’s my story.

Anyway, I was way too shy to tell Frank that I “liked” him, as we used to say, and we eventually lost touch. I would occasionally think about him over the years, but time and distance really made him nothing more than a distant memory that I would smile at when recalled.

Who would have thought that 17 years after graduation we would reconnect on a brand-new, little social media platform called, Facebook? Certainly not me. But, here we were, chatting away like no time had passed talking about some of our favorite class projects. I finally had the nerve to tell him about my crush. So scary! But, I did it. And I’m grateful that I did, because we celebrated our 10-year wedding anniversary in 2022.

If it weren’t for my husband, I don’t think I would have remained in the teaching field for as long as I did. Frank was (and is) my biggest cheerleader. He is my sounding board and my advice-giver, and he always sees the positive in any situation.

But, things were tough.

We lived far away from home, and the cost of living is much higher in Arizona than it is in Ohio.

And, once again, I found myself in the grind. Every day, I woke up at 6:00 a.m., got dressed, packed my lunch, drove thirty minutes to work, worked for eight hours, drove thirty minutes home, made dinner, watched TV, and went to bed. This time, though, I also had to squeeze in grading papers and preparing lesson plans.

Grind. Grind. Grind.

When I finally had enough of the politics of teaching and decided to leave the field, Frank and I moved back home to Ohio.

Frank quickly found a job, but I found myself starting all over once again. I knew I didn’t want to teach, but I had been away from the private sector for almost 11 years. What was I going to do?

As fate would have it, my old commercial real estate company was looking for an office administrator, and I’ll bet you can guess what happened next. Yup, you guessed it. I went right back to my old, but new, job in property management.

Back to the grind I am all too familiar with.

But, my story doesn’t end there.

In January of 2023, I made the decision to take action to escape the grind and joined Avon as an Independent Sales Representative. Since then, I have been working hard to grow my business. I am learning new things every day, and I get to do what I want, when I want, and how I want to do it. And, it's all mine!

I get to be my own boss, set my own hours, and be as creative as I want to be. The best part about it for me is that I am still able to use my teaching skills to educate my team and be the leader that I want to be!

I am halfway to my first goal, and it’s only April. I can see the light at the end of the tunnel, and I can see possibilities I could never see before!

There is an excitement in me unlike anything I have experienced, and I actually look forward to waking up in the morning!

The grind will soon be a distant memory. It’s only a matter of time!
